ICD-10 : Stands for International Classification of Diseases, 10th version is going on, Used to identify disease, injury or the illness, also known as Diagnosis Code – Dx, Format B23.L789 (one letter followed by two numbers a decimal and after decimal upto four alpha number), Managed by WHO, NCHS.
CPT : Stands for Current Procedural Terminology, 4th version is going on, Used to identify the treatment or service, also known as Service Code, Format 98046 (Five numeric numbers), Managed by AMA.
HCPCS : Stands for Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System, 2nd level is going on, Used to identify if any medical equipment or instrument required for the treatment, also known as Medical Supply Code, Format L1820 (One letter followed by four numeric numbers), Managed by CMS.
Modifiers : These are two digits numeric, alpha numeric or alphabetical codes which specifies the treatment taken by the patient. They are also known as specifiers, identifiers. For example : NU – New Equipment, UE – Used Equipment, RR – Rented Equipment, RT – Right Side, LT – Left Side, KX – Medically Necessary.
POS – Place of Service : These are two digits numeric code which identifies the physical location of the patient at the time of taking services or the treatment. For example : 11 – Doctor’s Office, 12 – Home, 21 – In-patient, 22 – Out-patient, 23 – Emergency, 24 – Ambulatory, 31 – Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF).
